The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) – Manila recently hosted the “Tanglaw Fest” on April 4-5, 2024, at the PUP Oval. With the theme “Mga Kabataang Makabayan, Tara sa Biyaheng Tungo sa Mapagpalayang Lipunan!” (Youth Patriots, Let’s Journey Towards a Liberated Society!), the festival aimed to raise awareness and take action on pressing societal issues in the Philippines, particularly Charter Change and the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP).
Organized by the PUP Sentral na Konseho ng Mag-aaral (PUP SKM) and led by Deniel Tolentino, Lance Casuyon, and CJ Diaz, this year’s Tanglaw Fest focused on campaigns against Charter Change (Cha-Cha), the PUV Modernization Program, and called for a budget increase for the University.
The event kicked off with a mobilization on the first day, followed by the highlight event on the second day, which saw the formation of the United PUP Against Charter Change (UPACC), uniting PUPians against the issue.
Solidarity speakers from various student organizations and committees, including Nnara Youth PUP, Samahang Janitorial, Bahaghari PUP, Kasarianlan PUP, Gabriella Youth PUP, and PUP OSR, graced the event, emphasizing Tanglaw Fest’s advocacy-driven nature.
The festival also showcased the talents of PUP’s homegrown artists, with individual performers, dance groups, pep squads, and university bands taking the stage. Special guest Maxie Andreison, a Queen of the Universe contestant, added glamour to the event.
A highlight of Tanglaw Fest was the first-ever “Let’s Get Drag: Serving the Community with Heels” contest, where drag queens combined charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent with advocacy campaigns incorporated into their couture and performances. Drag Queens like Asha Solé, Miz Hoesha, Tracy Audacity, Dulce Dollx, Edsa Xxtra, Renoah Arc, Mimarquise, and the first De-Serving Drag Superstar—Eliza showcased their talents and artistry, promoting inclusivity and social change.
Despite ongoing classes, PUPians enthusiastically participated in the event, enjoying lipsync performances by drag contestants and joining flash mobs organized by various formations on campus. Students also engaged with booths from sponsors and organizations, participating in interactive games and winning prizes ranging from photo booths to advocacy stickers.
According to PUP Tanglaw Fest Project Head Deniel Tolentino, the event’s advocacy-based approach challenges every Iskolar ng Bayan to join the fight for meaningful change, especially for marginalized sectors like the youth, workers, and peasants who are often neglected by unjust administrative policies.
As the event concluded, Tolentino reminded PUPians of the true essence of Tanglaw Fest: to stand together against injustices, call for societal changes, and fight for what is right, no matter the obstacles.
Tanglaw Fest 2024 was not just a celebration of talent and creativity but a powerful demonstration of PUP’s commitment to social responsibility and advocacy. Through unity and collective action, PUPians continue to be a beacon of hope for positive change in Philippine society.
